During my time at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, I carried out research into factors that influence the development of complications in type 1 diabetes. On moving to Leeds in 1982, I started a long-term research programme into factors that may trigger the onset of type 1 diabetes in children and young adults. This was carried out by collaborating with colleagues in establishing the Yorkshire register of diabetic children and young adults. Studies on the register have shown a steady increase in new cases of diabetes and suggested possible environmental causes.
I was a member of the steering group of the ASCEND study, a study of cardiovascular events in diabetes, run by the clinical trials unit at the University of Oxford. This is one of the largest clinical trials undertaken in diabetic patients. It examined whether taking aspirin or fish oil can help prevent diabetic complications.
In addition, I have collaborated in a variety of trials for new drug treatments for erectile dysfunction in both diabetic and non-diabetic men.
